Workshop 3

Camera Master Class

While undergoing the camera master class something’s I learned

- camera has now become more portable – before you would have to much equipment, you would take very long to move through different locations
- depth of field is the proportion of scene which appears
- if you change the depth of field in a large way = deep focus, small depth of field = shallow focus
- deep focus covers more than shallow focus
- shallow may be used if you are not intending to show the background
- pulling focus is adjusting the focus of camera
- pulling focus can make 1 person look more important than the other
- you can use the blur effect on camera if you are confident (instead of in editing)
- when filming something would usually happen before you pull focus like an action or reaction
- with handheld cameras you cant just walk around, you must remain calm and relaxed and practice must be done first

Camera

- XHA1
- Very large – 20x zoom
- Nice lens, smooth controls
- Has a built in density filter
- Preset positions
- Custom keys
- Can edit on most computers
- Can switch from built in MIC to external MIC quickly

Composition

- it is very important as it needs to tell the story
- if it is done well it will be very good
- if done wrong it can mess your work up
- we can misjudge because we know our films
- always look through the viewfinder and not over the camera
- solely concentrate on your job
- remember the rule of thirds
- angle and composition can make a major difference

Looking room & Head space

- the room on either side if someone is looking to that side for a specific reason
- don’t allow too much headspace
- imply the rule of thirds in head space

Lead room
- space for subject to move into
- similar to using tracks

Rhythm

- image has a rhythm
- how quick is it or how slow is it
